VIDEO: Miranda Lambert's nostalgic new "Automatic"
Earlier this year Miranda Lambert announced an upcoming new album, Platinum, and unveiled her first single. Now we finally have a music video for the nostalgic first release, "Automatic."
5 Reasons (other than weight) to talk about Miranda Lambert >>
For fans that fell in love with Lambert via fiery tunes like "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" and "Kerosene," the sweet tameness of "Automatic" may take time to win them over. For those who found Lambert during her "Me and Charlie Talking" phase or who may have become weepy during "The House that Built Me," this new track will immediately seem like a thing of beauty.
"Automatic" follows Country canon fairly well as it reminisces about days past. Similar to Tim McGraw's "Back When" and Rascal Flatts' "Mayberry," the song is all about yearning for a simpler time. Lambert spends time waxing poetic about everything from using maps instead of GPS to using a cassette tape to record songs off the radio. It's all summed up nicely with the slightly cliché but 100 percent lovable (because it's Lambert) chorus:
Hey, whatever happened to waitin' your turn
Doing it all by hand,
'Cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seemed so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic

The video is just as full of the warmth of yesterday as the song itself. Starting in a dusty room, we watch as Lambert goes through a trunk of old things, pulling out a pocket watch and cassette player and taking time to consider each one. While the beginning sequence feels a little trite, the rest of the video is flawless. It gets better when Lambert goes for a drive through a town time seems to have left untouched. Country girls across the globe will surely yelp, "Hey! That looks like where I'm from," as Miranda steers an ancient Chevy over hills and down back roads.
It's hard to place, but there's something about "Automatic" that reminds us of the Miranda who waltzed into our worlds nearly a decade ago. "Automatic" is warm and sweet, exactly what we need for spring.
