The 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards show kicked off on Sunday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it was a night that did not disappoint!

The prestigious event started off with an incredible performance by The Band Perry, who sang their hit song "Chainsaw."

The night was hosted by Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton, who gave the crowd plenty of laughs and moments to remember, including attempting to re-create the famous Oscar selfie and wearing motorcycle helmets.

In fact, Shelton even found time to mock Britney Spears, saying, "If you don't like live music, you can go see Britney Spears down the street."

We wonder what newly married Jamie-Lynn Spears thought about the dis on her big sis.

The night was not all just fun and games, though. There were spectacular performances by several country music stars, including co-host Shelton's performance with his The Voice co-coach Shakira. The duo performed their single "Medicine" for the first time.

Other noteworthy performances include Lady Antebellum and guest star Stevie Nicks performing "Rhiannon" as well as performances by husband-and-wife duo Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, who sang the hit "Meanwhile Back at Mama's."

Dierks Bentley and Sheryl Crow also hit the stage to perform their duet "I Hold On."

And some of the big winners of the night included Miranda Lambert, who was nominated for a whopping seven awards, and whilst she didn't take home all seven, she did win big! The 30-year-old singer took home the awards for Single Record of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year. She also wowed the crowd with her killer performance of "Automatic."

Tim McGraw took home Video of the Year for "Highway Don't Care" with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban. And George Strait also stole the show with Entertainer of the Year, and there could not be a more deserving winner than the country music veteran.

Scary! Miranda Lambert's jet had emergency landing

Miranda Lambert was on her way to Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, but her plane decided it had other ideas.

The 30-year-old country star must have had quite a fright when her private jet was forced to make an emergency landing in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Lambert had been en route to Nashville for the CMT Awards from New York City, New York, where she'd appeared on Good Morning America, when the aircraft encountered difficulties.

The jet plane lost pressure and was forced to divert, but after spending three hours on the ground, it resumed its journey southward, the Daily Mail reports.

The "Automatic" hit maker decided to share her experience with fans via Instagram when she uploaded a picture of her and local firefighters dressed in platinum (also the name of her latest album) suits. "Our plane had an emergency landing in Clarksburg WV. But don't worry, we found platinum fire suits," she wrote.

Apparently, the blond beauty was calm and happy throughout the entire experience. Scott Poling, a lineman at the airport, revealed to Metro News, "She's super down-to-earth, doesn't act like a celebrity, a country girl."

"They put on our fire suits inside here to promote their new album Platinum, which I have pictures of. She autographed a couple of CDs for me and my buddies here. It was pretty cool, " Poling added. "She was really happy. She thanked us several times."

We're glad Lambert eventually got to her destination safely!

CMA Music Festival: This is what happens when you send a non-country fan

Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert CMA Music Festival

Photo: Judy Eddy/WENN.com

I prefer The Black Keys to The Band Perry, Geographer to Garth Brooks and Disclosure to Dierks Bentley any day. I can't tell the difference between Eric Church and Brantley Gilbert, and I could never understand why anyone wanted to go to Country Thunder in Arizona, to which I would respond, "Seriously, though, why would you want to listen to essentially the same song for four days?"

And then I attended the CMA Music Festival in Nashville.

Every music festival in the country, mapped >>

Country musicians love what they do — and for a reason

I'll be the first to admit that while touring the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, I got a little teary eyed while watching a video of Blake Shelton and Carrie Underwood surprised onstage with an invitation to become part of the Opry. Shocked and overwhelmed with emotions, they had made it — as part of the institution that made country music was it is today.

And then I realized that's the difference between country music artists and, well, everyone else: Country musicians seemingly strive toward attaining one goal. It isn't making millions or becoming a recognizable household name with a string of No. 1 hits under his or her belt (though I'm sure these are great perks). It's to join a community of well-respected, esteemed musicians — from Johnny Cash to Minnie Pearl.

MUSIC REVIEW: Johnny Cash lands Out Among the Stars >>

It's just one huge love-fest

The Band Perry, CMA Music Festival 2014

I can't tell you how many times the country artists on stage vocalized their love and appreciation for their fans. "We remember a day when there were more people onstage than out in the crowd," Kimberly Perry recalled, as she continued with her thanks to all their fans.

But one statement in particular really stood out (paraphrased): "Look around. CMA Music Festival is the largest family reunion in the nation. Don't you agree?" Blake Shelton nailed it right on the head. With nearly 80,000 people in attendance, matching 2013's attendance, the festival had this undeniable electricity in the air — and it didn't need a Ferris wheel, strobes and light shows to pull it off. This was created and sustained all day and all night by the people, the fans. And it was great to be a part of it, even if I did feel like the redheaded stepchild.

Expect the unexpected

Rascal Flatts, CMA Music Festival 2014

Before walking into LP Field on Thursday night, I stopped at the gate and asked myself if I was getting myself into three hours of mind-numbingly repetitive songs about drinking and heartbreak.

Of course, I was wrong — and on more than one occasion. Standouts include:

  • The Band Perry covering Pitbull and Kesha's "Timber"
  • Rascal Flatts singing Pharrell's "Happy" — a cappella
  • The introduction to Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert's surprise performance of "Somethin' Bad" (watch it below)

It's true: I flew into Nashville a country music skeptic and boarded my flight back home with a newfound appreciation for country artists, country fans and country music culture. Hey, I may even sprinkle a country song or two into my EDM- and indie-heavy playlists (OK, I already have). And this is all thanks to the pure energy and simplicity of the live performances over the past weekend.

Country music is the soundtrack to a very specific way of living. It's the mindset that life is good, so why not enjoy it and treat each other well? It's simple, really, but rare to experience. Here's to next year, CMA Music Festival.

INTERVIEW: How Miranda Lambert's "crazy dog lady" ways help shelter pets

Each year, more than four million dogs wind up in animal shelters. Let that sink in for second.

If you find that number staggering, you're in good company. It's no big secret that "Automatic" singer Miranda Lambert has a soft spot a country mile wide for animals — the bighearted star makes no pretenses about her penchant for picking up strays.

So when an opportunity came along to collaborate with Pedigree for the brand's See What Good Food Can Do campaign, Lambert didn't hesitate. "My biggest passion outside of music is to rescue animals," she explained, "So this really worked perfectly as a partnership."

Today, in conjunction with Pedigree, Lambert unveils a documentary short that showcases — along with her passion for animal rescue — the campaign's shelter renovation program, an initiative through which the brand is donating time and resources to improve shelters all over the U.S.

With the help of the independent charitable organization Greater Good, Pedigree associates and community volunteers are visiting these shelters to tackle projects like painting, installing new signage and enhancing kennels and play areas.

For Lambert, the initiative really hit home. Quite literally, in fact: Her documentary short was filmed at the Tishomingo Animal Shelter in her Oklahoma hometown.

"I've spent a lot of time trying to improve it over the last eight years, but it's a slow-go, you know?" she told us. "And they came in for two days and did incredible things."

After all was said and done, seeing the shelter transformed into one that is more welcoming for the dogs it houses and the potential adopters who visit them proved affecting for Lambert. "When I watched it, it was so emotional and moving to see all these people from all over the U.S. come together with one passion, and it's all to improve the lives of these animals," she revealed.

Of course, Lambert comes by her love of animals honestly, having been raised in a rural area by a family who never seemed to turned away a stray.

"We lived way out in the country most of my life, and so there was always a stray or someone would dump a dog, and my parents would let me keep it," she said, adding her family was known to take in everything from horses to goats… and plenty of pups. "We always had a rescue of some sort… it's just part of my blood."

The country star's love for dogs, in particular, is deep-rooted. "My parents brought me home from the hospital and a yellow lab was sleeping under my crib," she laughed. "I mean, I put bonnets on him, and he came to tea parties. I've literally never been without a dog my whole entire life."

Much like they were when she was growing up, pets are part of the family to Lambert. "I have six rescue dogs, and they're literally our family. We don't have children, so our dogs are our children. I think my husband has reached his limit, though," she joked of fellow country fixture Blake Shelton. "I think we're at the crazy limit now… I'm becoming a crazy dog lady!"

Truth be told, Lambert would probably have 100 more dogs if it were feasible. But since it isn't, she channels her puppy love into partnerships like the Pedigree See What Good Food Can Do campaign and into her own rescue organization, MuttNation Foundation.

Lambert founded MuttNation in 2009 with her mother, Bev, with the goal of working to end pet suffering and homelessness in the U.S. and abroad. According to its website, the charity volunteers and partners with shelters and animal assistance organizations to provide spay and neuter programs, medical treatments, adoptions, preventions, transportation, legislative changes and education.

Between the foundation and her partnership with Pedigree, it seems obvious the singer-songwriter — whose fifth studio album, Platinum, recently debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart — doesn't intend to slow down her animal rescue efforts anytime soon.

And, really, she wouldn't have it any other way. "I always wanted a farm, and I have a farm now. It's kind of the first thing I did whenever I established myself in my career: I bought my own farm in Oklahoma and got some goats and chickens. And that's my haven, being surrounded by animals," she shared.

"People will say 'How do you stay grounded?' and 'What do you do to get away?'" Lambert mused, "And I say, 'I just go to the woods and I surround myself with animals.' That's what makes me happy."

How Miranda Lambert's "crazy dog lady" ways help shelter pets >>

And, today, she's got a lot to show for it. She just premiered the dreamy video for her debut single, "God Made Girls," and the song and the girl singin' it are creating some major buzz (you have to check the cover of Meghan Trainor's "All That Bass" she just posted).

Proving she's every bit as adorable as we imagined — and maybe even more so — RaeLynn let us grill her about everything from her favorite movie theater snack to hanging out with her mentors, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton.

1. What's the best advice Miranda and Blake have ever given you?

"Definitely to stay true to myself. They told me, 'You never want to be a lukewarm artist — you always want to be polarizing. You always want to be different, and don't change that about you because that's what makes you special, Rae.' And they've always told me to stick to that. And that has totally stuck with me, because I don't want to be anyone else. I want to be unique... I want to be like me."

2. You've basically been adopted into the Lambert/Shelton family, and honestly you look like you could be their kin anyway. What's life on the farm like with those two?

"Oh my gosh, it's just fun and crazy. They just hang out and chill and eat lots of food and play some cards and laugh and cut up. Me and Blake like to watch random, funny YouTube videos — that's me and his little bonding thing that we do."

3. What always makes you cry?

"I always — gosh, that's so hard — I always cry when I watch The Notebook. Isn't that sad? Every time. Every time I cry."

It's confirmed: Gwen Stefani is the new judge on The Voice >>

4. Is there any high school milestone you missed that you'd like to recreate?

"Well, I was really mad that I never got to go to prom. But then I get to go to all these awards shows, and that's way cooler than prom!" she laughed. "But I did get upset that I didn't get to go to prom."

5. What's the best movie theater snack?

"OK, not all movie theaters have it, but my favorite movie theater snack is to eat a pickle at the movie theater. In Texas, you can get a pickle at the movie theaters, and I love eating pickles."

6. What phone app could you never live without?

"My Instagram app."

7. If you were getting married tomorrow, what would your first dance song be?

"Oh my God, that's so hard! It would probably be a dramatic Coldplay song. I love Coldplay."

Music review: Blake Shelton feat. Pistol Annies "Boys Round Here" >>

8. Who is your favorite fairytale princess?

"I'm obsessed with Tinker Bell, but I do really love Cinderella. But I grew up liking the fairies and the mermaids. Oh, Ariel! Ariel's a fairytale princess. I think she's my favorite. Actually, Rapunzel's awesome, too. Rapunzel's my new one. But as for a classic one, definitely The Little Mermaid."

9. What has been your best Halloween costume to date?

"Speaking of fairies, last year I was like, 'I want to be a fairy.' And then when I got my outfit on, I just looked too much like myself. So I went and found a beard and I was a redneck fairy."

10. Outside of Miranda and Blake, which celeb do you think would make a great BFF?

"Katy Perry, for sure."

Miranda Lambert's body gets more headlines than her career and it's not OK

$

0

It seems nearly all the headlines or stories I've been reading about Miranda lately have to do with her weight. Or her body. Or her diet. Or her fitness regimen. Even though she just turned 30 and dropped an absolutely phenomenal album, Platinum, over the summer. But we're not talking about that. Instead, we're now somewhat obsessively focused on her new "hot" body.

Why do we do this to women, celebrities or average Janes? Frankly, it needs to stop.

There's something really disconcerting when you hear remarks about your body, either positive or negative. I've been there. Following a health crisis that destroyed my ability to eat normally for a year, I lost a lot of weight. And while I was just starting to get my appetite back, I heard so many comments about my body — words ranging from "tiny" to "anorexic," "skinny" to "perfect." (I guess it depends on your taste.) But all of a sudden, I was more a body than I was a person. Everything was about my size and my weight. And no matter how "body love" or "health and happiness first" you are, that noise gets in your head.

"Weight talk is a vicious cycle for women to get involved in," says self-esteem and body image expert Jess Weiner, author of Life Doesn't Begin 5 Pounds From Now. "It can create pre-occupation and obsession with body size versus the more meaningful qualities of life."

Therapist and certified eating disorder specialist Maggie Baumann, MFT, agrees with Weiner. "What happens is the human being identity gets lost in the identification of the body as the human," she explains. And no one wants to be just a body, as that false perception will destroy your soul.

Baumann explains that the media fixation on Miranda's size is not just dangerous for Miranda, but for the consumer, as well. "The 'weight talk' is not healthy for anyone — not the celebrity, nor the public consumed with focusing on weight and body image. The media is sending an unhealthy message to the public. When women or men focus on others' bodies as an 'ideal,' it makes them actually feel there is something wrong with their own bodies."

Baumann says she has clients who have eating disorders and continually soak up the celebrity news. While developing an ED is complicated, it can be influenced by external factors like environment and society. And we can't not compare when we see celebrities. "What I say to my clients is, 'You are not a number on a scale,'" Baumann says. "'Letting your identity be defined by what the scale says is losing who you are as a human being.'"

From a regular nutritional standpoint, dietitian Barbara Linhardt, M.S., R.D., says excessively commenting on anyone's weight will probably motivate the person to keep going — but not in the way you want. "Trash talking about someone's size or excessively praising weight loss may motivate them to eat differently or drop dress sizes, but likely won't motivate them to do so in a healthy way," she says. "Everyone, including Miranda Lambert, has their own personal history and relationship with food. The best thing we can do when confronted by the weight-fixated media is focus on what makes us feel healthy and strong."

Weiner's advice? Stop. Just stop focusing on Miranda's weight loss — or your BFF's dress size, or even your own. Just be healthy. "It's hard not to compare yourself to your friends, let alone celebrities," says Weiner. "But my advice? Run your own race, love your own body and learn to take care of it the best way you can."

Then, Miranda reaches out to hold the small hand. That hand belonged to 7-year-old Brooke Hester, who is in a fight for her life. She has stage IV neuroblastoma cancer and has been battling it for the last four years.

Miranda makes eye contact with the little girl and she begins to break down. She cannot finish the emotional song, so she lets the audience finish the lyrics while she composes herself. The clip even shows the Grammy winner wiping away tears as the audience chimes in to help her out.

TasteofCountry.com talked to the little girl's mother, Jessica Hester, who said, "I am so glad this was Brooke's first real concert and even more astounded at the compassion that not only got her to the foot of that stage, but the absolute love and sincerity that Miranda clearly shared with my daughter."

It was a moment worth remembering for both mother and daughter. Jessica explained, "I remember Brooke kissed my cheek (as if I had any credit for the evening whatsoever) and said, 'Mommy this is the best night ever!'"

The tickets were donated to the family, but Brooke was in a Michigan hospital only days before the concert. Luckily, her immune system was strong enough for the little girl to have her lifelong dream fulfilled.
